Keep Your Pearls Looking Gorgeous

First and foremost be sure to wear them! Since pearls are formed in the water they benefit tremendously from absorbing some of the oils from your skin.

After being worn wipe your pearls down with a soft cloth to remove any excess oils and dirt before putting them away.

When not being worn make sure to store them away from other jewelry or objects that may scratch their finish, and never store them in an airtight environment or anywhere that may get hot. Pearls need moisture otherwise they run the risk of cracking.

Ideal storage options include wrapping your pearls in a soft cloth or pouch.

Other things to keep in mind. Keep pearls away from chlorine bleach, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, ammonia, hairspray, perfume, and cosmetics, as these substances will damage the pearl surface. Also, do not submerge your pearls in water. The chlorine in the water will loosen the epoxy securing the pearls to their mountings. Also, the silk your pearls are strung on will run the risk of stretching and breaking.

It is recommended to restring pearls once every two to three years. Be sure to have each pearl knotted separately, so they do not rub together and wear on the pearl nacre.
