Choosing a Nontraditional Engagement Ring

While the majority of men buying engagement rings in the Cary and Raleigh area still go for traditional colorless diamonds, nontraditional ring choices are on the rise. Men will sometimes consider the future bride’s favorite color when choosing a stone, or perhaps he wishes to feature her birthstone. Nontraditional rings are perfect for the girl who takes pride in her sense of individuality and isn’t afraid of making a bold fashion statement. Mark Zuckerberg

When Zuckerberg decided to tie the knot with his girlfriend of nine years, Priscilla Chan, he designed a simple band featuring a ruby instead of the traditional colorless diamond.  Considering Priscilla’s Chinese heritage, Zuckerberg likely chose the ruby with the cultural significance of the stone in mind.  In China, rubies represent wisdom and good fortune. Kate Middleton

After becoming engaged to Charles Windsor in 1981, Princess Diana chose a stunning oval 18-carat blue sapphire and white diamond ring (left).
